Below are the dates and details of the programme.
Each screening will be presented by one of your favourite Mire members!

Rat Life and Diet in North America, Joyce Wieland
Canada – 1969 – 16 min – 16 mm

Beneath a layer of humour lies a powerful political film, an ode to rebellion where cats play the role of jailers and rats (actually gerbils!) play the rebels. Somewhere between anthropomorphic fiction and animal documentary.

 > pre programme of Chicken Run, Peter Lord et Nick Park

Avante, Jean-Michel Bouhours
France – 2024 – 4 min – NUM

Avante was the name of a school textbook from triumphant Franco’s Spain in the early 50s. On every page were instilled traditional Catholic teaching and authoritarian, reactionary ideological discourse. Drawing on these four volumes transformed into palimpsests meant engaging in a trial of strength to oppose the text with the presence of a foreign figure, a playful dance, and then rendering the ideological content illegible.

 > pre programme of Lord of the Flies, Peter Brook

Las mujeres de Pinochet, Eduardo Menz
Canada – 2004 – 12 min – VOSTF – NUM
In this experimental short, the viewer is forced to role-play through the repeated employment and alteration of the text, sound and image until his or her expectations have been truthfully realized. The video examines class structure, the meaning of beauty and forgotten history through two very different but significant women during Pinochet’s brutal regime of the late 1980’s.
